The hottest books out there right now are on the independent scene. With DC's New 52 and Marvel NOW!, the big two of the comic book publishing world are panicking and rebooting their titles to try to boost interest with new readers. The unfortunate side-effect is that they are alienating their current readers. If you're finding yourself bored with what the mainstream has to offer, then you need to check out Sebastian Hawks - Creature Hunter.
Greg Mclean (creator), Tristan Jones (writer), and Christian DiBari (artist) have launched a crowdfunding project on Pozible, an Australian Kickstarter equivalent. Taking advantage of the alternative means of production/publishing the 21st century has to offer, this is definitely a project that fans will love but does not fit into the super-hero mold Marvel and DC are too afraid of deviating from. Based in the early 1900s, Sebastian Hawks is an explorer/historian who has been commissioned by Queen Victoria to hunt and capture 12 mythical creatures for the British Museum. Hooked yet?
"So if you love old-fashioned high adventure, monsters and heroes and villains, all set in the dazzling Victorian era then you’ll love this book."
For the TMNT fans out there, this project is being written and drawn by two noteworthy people. Tristan Jones wrote the now highly regarded Gang War issues for Mirage's Tales of the TMNT. Christian DiBari did storyboarding on 4Kids' TMNT animated series.
To date the project has raised over $11,000 and are on their way to attaining their goal of $35,000. They have less than 50 days left to reach that goal. Check out the video Greg Mclean and Tristan Jones put together explaining the project and support independent comics.
