As much as I love the Crossover Comics Podcast, it has been on hiatus recently and I have been listening to a variety of other podcasts that discuss comic books. This book was brought to my attention by a hilarious review in episode #137 of the NonCanonical podcast. There was so much uncontainable laughter, I just had to get a copy. Bravest Warriors is about four teenage heroes who save aliens throughout the universe. This is an original comic book series based on the web series from Adventure Time and is aimed at teenagers and young adults.
As a TMNT fan, I enjoy a little comedy in my comics, but I'm not typically drawn to this type of humor. When I opened the inside cover to see it was written by the amazing Joey Comeau (a softer world, Overqualified), I knew I was in for a real treat. As a fellow Canadian, I have been following Joey’s a softer world webcomic for almost 10 years now and always find his work to be top notch.
The story is so ridiculous, I don't think I can give it justice by recapping it. Basically, the book starts out when the Bravest Warriors are sent to rid the world of sexism. After exploding what seems to be the planet that causes sexism, what do they do to celebrate? They bake cupcakes and have them battle to the death of course?! If that isn't enough to make you want to give this book a try, then I have six words for you, "The Zombie Food Court From Heck."
The art by Mike Holmes is really spot on. There are so many little details going on in the background which adds to the ongoing dialogue. There are also some jokes that go on for a few panels and are told entirely in the art. Joey and Mike make a great team.
This first issue was released a little over a month ago and issue #02 just came out. This book is based off a web series so if you like this type of humor, you should check out their YouTube channel.
